http://www.lifemyway.org/resources/default.asp?s=6132&sst=1149

This movie is about the love between two opposite people, a greaser and a nice girl, Sandy and Danny. They met on the beach and begin to fall in love but neither wants to admit that they changed a little bit for that person. Danny is part of the greasers and Sandy becomes part of the Pink Ladies. The two are reunited but Danny will not admit who he became for Sandy and ultimately she is forced to change for him. The movie came out in 1978 but it was also a hit Broadway production.

Summer Nights
"Summer Nights." John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, Grease. Polydor, 825095, 1978. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1056520 (April 6, 2010).

This song is about the nights that Sandy and Danny spent together during the summer. Sandy is singing her view to the Pink Ladies as Danny is singing his, jazzed up view, to the greasers. They talk about all the fun they had and how they began to fall in love. Although, Sandy thought she was leaving they do not know they are at the same school. This plays an important role as it foreshadows for them meeting again and falling in love. Because they told all of their friends it is bound to come up again later in the movie. The song has a general rock and roll feel with electric guitar and drums. The drums are used to build up between the verses and the singers, otherwise the beat is kept fairly constant. When everyone is singing the drums fit in the way their voices are singing and hit the same beats. Towards the end a tambourine comes in with the same beat but just a different sound. There is also some piano, but it is barely audible and doesn't seem to quite fit in with the song. This song is meant to have a mainly rock and roll feel until the end of the song when it slows down and they talk about leaving for the summer.

You're the One That I Want
"You're the One that I Want." John Farrar, John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, Grease. Polydor, 825095, 1978. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1056520 (April 6, 2010).

This song comes at the end of the movie when Sandy has changed herself to win Danny back. They are at the carnival and they are dancing around teasing each other with song. She changed into his perfect type of girl and it is driving him crazy. This is important because it leads to their new found relationship and it also closes their past. It shows that anything can be done for love even if it means changing yourself completely, like Sandy did for Danny. The song begins with a piano playing with some fancy rolls and trills. The drums come in when Danny begins to sing creating the beat. There is also a bass line throughout the song that is held constant with the drums to keep a steady beat. The beat speeds up a little bit when they sing together and then goes back to what it originally was when they sing alone. There are also backup singers in this song behind their voices, repeating what is being said.

The Little Mermaid
http://www.pixiepalace.com/booksmain/fiction/stephanie-calmenson/

This is a story about a mermaid, Ariel, whose father is King. She collects goods from land that have gotten lost in shipwrecks. She dreams of living on land and in turn trades in her voice for that chance after falling for Prince Eric. The movie came out in 1989 and has been performed on Broadway.

Part of Your World
"Part of Your World." Alan Menken, Jodi Benson, The Little Mermaid. Walt Disney Records, 861618, 1989. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7248091 (April 19, 2010).

This is sung when Ariel is looking up upon Prince Eric's world wishing she could be a part of it. She is in her cavern with all of her human treasures talking about the human culture and how she wishes she could be a part of it. She sings about how she is sick of being a mermaid and living under the sea. This song foreshadows at how Ariel will do anything to be part of the human world and that she will go to that extreme. This song allows the listener to understand Ariel's longing to be there and with Prince Eric. The song begins with strings playing Ariel's singing. They follow the same pattern of her singing although they are not the same melody. There is a wind instrument playing when she is singing, simply holding notes that rise with her voice. As the dynamics of her voice rise more instruments are added and the dynamics rise as well. When she holds notes out the strings play runs to reach the same note to move on to the next verse. The music of this song is very freely played, like what Ariel is wishing for.

Kiss the Girl
"Kiss the Girl." Alan Menken, Samuel E. Wright, The Little Mermaid. Walt Disney Records, 861618, 1989. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7248091 (April 19, 2010).

This song is sung by Sebastian, the crab, after Ariel has given her voice to the sea witch to be able to be on land. Sebastian is singing to Prince Eric to kiss her and many other animals are playing and singing as well. They want her to get kissed so she will get her voice back. This is an important song because it is the beginning of Eric's love for Ariel and also trying to get away from the witch's spell. Because the witch tipped over the boat this foreshadows that she will do something bad to get rid of Ariel once and for all. The song begins with percussion and strings and winds. The drums are playing lightly in the background and there is also a synthesizer which responds back to what is playing in the melody. The music has an "island" feel with the drums and the synthesizer, which sounds like a xylophone. This song is all about creating the mood for the two of them to fall in love and for her to get her voice back.

Colors of the Wind
"Colors of the Wind." Alan Menken, Judy Kuhn, Pocahontas. Walt Disney Records, 60874, 1995. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1480892 (April 6, 2010).

This is song is when Pocahontas is trying to explain her tribe's way of life to John Smith. She teaches him to listen to the ways of nature and how to follow your heart. She wants him to understand that there is more than gold as a wonder of the earth, there is spirit. This song plays an important role because this is when he first begins to understand and accept their culture. He begins to respect earth and therefore will work to protect it which will be needed later. The song begins with the wind instruments playing a few notes back and forth until the flute joins in. Much of the song has wind instruments and some percussion playing like the "wind." As her voice rises so do the instruments and each instrument creates a new "voice." Often times the flute plays the same melody that she is singing or mimics it. The horns are not used extensively but are used in the rise between verses. Throughout the entire song there is a feel for the wind that is ever present in her life and flows throughout the music.

The Lion King
http://www.ultimatedvd.org/en/trailers/Details.aspx?Trailer_Id=426

Hakuna Matata
"Hakuna Matata." Elton John, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Jason Weaver, Joseph Williams, The Lion King. Walt Disney Records, 600858, 1994. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6160035 (April 6, 2010).

This is when Simba has just met Simon and Pumbaa and he is learning their way of life. Hakuna Matata means "no worries" and that is the motto they choose to live by. This song continues to play as Simba ages from a cub to a young adult. This song plays an important role in the movie because it shows how Simba's life changes from one family to another. It also creates the life he is going to be living and the family he will be with during that time. He learns to live in the moment and not worry about what is coming in the future. This song begins with an African sounding xylophone and has a lot of drumming in it. There are also instruments playing in the background setting up the melody that will be sung later. The song has a very native feel to it and takes many influences from tribes. It also includes piano and string instruments that build up the tension with the song. The drums have a constant beat throughout the song, creating the feel for the song. This song takes native sounds and builds them into a song for a movie while still using instruments that are common in movies and musicals such as winds, horns, and strings.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight?
"Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Elton John, Nathan Lane, Kristle Edwards, Ernie Sabella, Sally Dworsky, Joseph Williams, The Lion King. Walt Disney Records, 600858, 1994. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6160035 (April 6, 2010).

This song takes place when Nala, one of Simba's childhood friends, finds Simba and they begin to catch up. This song is sung looking down at the two together and realizing that they are falling in love. It also recognizes Simon and Pumbaa's frustration with Simba falling in love. This song plays an important role because Nala will have a vital role in bringing Simba back to the rock. Without the two of them meeting again his family wouldn't have been saved and this song foreshadows to that. The song begins with a flute playing and then there are runs going up and down as Simon is explaining to Pumbaa what could happen. The strings are playing behind them and then the off screen voice begins there are also native sounds and native voices singing in the background. There is an African drumbeat behind Simba and Nala singing which continues into the rest of the song. As the dynamic of the song grows there are native voices as well the drums playing and some other percussion instruments.

Aladdin
http://www.tkn.tu-berlin.de/research/trace/movie.html

Aladdin is the movie of a poor "street rat" who wants to change his life and become a better person. He falls in love with the princess and she falls in love too but they have to face hardship after hardship together. He also finds a magical lamp which produces a genie who becomes one of his best friends. This Disney movie came out in 1992 and has been performed in many children's theaters.

A Whole New World
"A Whole New World." Alan Menken, Tim Rice, Brade Kane, Lea Salgona, Aladdin. Walt Disney Records, 861163, 1992. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6762685 (April 6, 2010).

In this song Aladdin is taking the princess, Jasmine, on a magic carpet ride. He wants her to see the world past the castle and experience what life is like outside of the walls. He teaches her how to see things in a different light and look at life in a different way. This is an important part in the movie because it is when Aladdin and Jasmine first begin to fall in love. It foreshadows of the adventures the two of them will have together and although their love is unspoken it takes a look at how hard they are falling. This song has a much slower feel to it, bringing out the love between the two. The song begins with a synthesizer which plays a simple pattern over and over again throughout the song. There are wind chimes that seem to rise up as his voice rises and the drums bring the music into the next verse but leave again once it has started. The drums have one hit per bar towards the middle of the song but are not overpowering and the synthesizer and guitar repeat the melody line during a lyric break. The music in this song is used to enhance the mood of the setting, causing them to get closer together.

Friend Like Me
"Friend Like Me." Howard Ashman, Robin Williams, Aladdin. Walt Disney Records, 861163, 1992. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6762685 (April 6, 2010).

This song is sung to Aladdin when he first meets the genie. The genie is showing off his powers to Aladdin telling him that he is a friend unlike any other. The genie shows off in some crazy ways from costumes to props to putting on his own show. This song foreshadows on the idea that the genie is going to play a large role in Aladdin's future. It becomes important because of how Aladdin's future is going to play out especially when it comes to the princess and making Aladdin presentable to her. This song has a lot of horn blasts throughout it and some interesting sounding instruments. The horns often mimic or play the same rhythm as the genie as he is singing. The trombones often act as genie's other voice. There are a lot of percussion instruments in this song which make interesting noises that play against what the genie is talking about. This song uses all aspects of music to play on the genie's powers.

Angel of Music
"Angel of Music." Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Jennifer Ellison, Phantom of the Opera. Sony, 93521, 2005. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6794157&style=classical (April 6, 2010).

This song occurs when Christine is singing along in her dressing room and she is talking to her friend Meg about the angel of music. Christine tells her that the angel of music has been tutoring her in singing and believes he was sent to her from her father. This song plays an important role because if Christine did not believe he was sent by her father she would have never followed him. This song foreshadows his role in her life soon after this night and how much influence he will have over her. This song begins with the singers being a Capella until a flute joins in. The flute is very subtle and hard to hear and is not playing for very long. There are some instruments in the background playing the melody of the song quietly while the girls are talking. The strings come out when Christine begins to sing once again, the string instruments move mostly when her voice is holding a note. The music of this song is not overpowering and is very quiet and faint, making it feel like a dream. When she begins to sing about the angel of music the strings come out more and play a more prominent role but once again disappear into the background. Her voice takes on the main role throughout this song and mesmerizes the phantom.

The Music of the Night
"The Music of the Night." Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gerard Butler, Phantom of the Opera. Sony, 93521, 2005. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6794157&style=classical (April 6, 2010).

This song is sung after the phantom has brought Christine down into his lair beneath the theater. He seduces her by using his "music of the night" and allows his voice to put her into a trance. The song mentions his unspoken love for her and he urges her to forget the world she's known and become part of his world. This song is important because it shows the power the phantom has over her, but also how crazy he is. He will do anything for her and therefore this leads him to do crazy things that will be shown in future events in the musical. This song begins with the phantom singing and strings backing him up. As his dynamics change the instruments dynamics also changing, strengthening the dynamic levels. There is also some piano playing when it is just the phantom singing although when it is string and piano the strings are overpowering the piano so it is very hard to make out. Upon occasion there are also some wind instruments and horns but they are not common throughout the song. The strings are the most prominent instruments in this song and often times they mimic the phantoms singing and when his dynamic rises more instruments join in emphasizing his change.

Seasons of Love
"Seasons of Love." Jonathan Larson, Various Artists, Rent. Warner Brothers, 50003, 2005. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7897241 (April 6, 2010).

This song begins second act of the musical and is performed by the entire cast. The song references recent past events as well as events to come. The song talks about how short life is and how you need to live in the moment instead of measuring everything out. The song has an importance in the movie because it does reference the past and the future and everything that the performers have been through. This creates a meaning to their lives and gives them something to live for. The song begins with piano playing and a wind instrument soon joins. The piano playing in the beginning creates a harmonic framework for the rest of the song. When they are all singing the drums join in as well as other percussion instrument, such as tambourine. In general the piano part and the drum beat is kept the same throughout and strengthens the dynamics of the singer but never overpowers them. Although there are random wind instruments throughout the song the main instruments are piano, drums, and the voices of the singers.

La Vie Boheme
"La Vie Boheme." Jonathan Larson, Various Artists, Rent. Warner Brothers, 50003, 2005. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7897241 (April 6, 2010).

This song celebrates the life of bohemianism, especially in Alphabet City. In the middle of the song there is a break in which Mimi and Roger learn they are both HIV+ and decide to start a relationship together. The song lists many ideas, trends, and other symbols. This plays an important role not just because of the new things that have started but also because of the love for life that everyone has. They remembered their reasons to live and are celebrating the lives that they have. The song begins with piano playing fancy rhythms that sometimes sound like mistakes. An organ then begins to play in chords while they are talking Bohemia being dead, almost like a funeral procession. The piano then comes back picking up the beat, making it more upbeat as its pattern begins to add more and more each time through. Piano is the most common instrument throughout the song but with the break in the middle the song slows down while they are learning more about each other. Then once they come back into the restaurant the pace picks back up and everyone is in a happier mood and the partying once again begins with upbeat, fast paced piano playing.

Moulin Rougehttp://www.rapidshareindex.com/Soundtrack-Moulin-Rouge-_196876.html

This is the story of a cabaret called The Moulin Rouge, the star of the show was Satine. Christian met a group of men putting on a show and soon became the "poetry writer" for the show and he was to present this idea to Satine. The show went through and although Satine and Christian were falling in love an investor is looking to own Satine. The movie came out in 2001 and was a musical made for the movies.

Your Song
"Your Song." Elton John, Ewan McGreggor, Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge. Interscope Records, 493035, 2001. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1820052 (April 6, 2010).

This occurs in the movie when Christian is trying to convince Satine to take part in their production. He is having trouble getting the words out right to her so instead he begins to sing. This is an important part in the movie because this is when they first begin to fall for each other. Although it isn't said out loud they are both developing feelings for one another and falling into a trap. The beginning of the song is a Capella until the piano begins to play in the background. Slowly string instruments join into the song, the piano is playing a fairly constant melody while the strings are creating rise and fall. As his voice rises up the rhythm begins to change adding more piano and the strings have a greater dynamic range. As she begins to fall for him the strings get stronger as her feelings grow.

Come What May
"Come What May." Elton John, Ewan McGreggor, Alessandro Safina, Moulin Rouge. Interscope Records, 493035, 2001. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1820052 (April 6, 2010).

This song is the love theme in the movie. This song occurs after the forbidden relationship between Christian and Satine has been discovered. Christian decides to write this song and include it in the musical he is writing. This song symbolizes that either time either of them sing this song, they can secretly declare their love for each other. This becomes an important song in the movie because later in the movie jealousy and lying make it difficult for the truth to stand out, but as they sing this song to each other they know their love will always hold true. The song begins with strings, synthesizer, and piano and they remain throughout the song behind the singer. There are also some wind instruments and percussion in the beginning on the song. There is a shaker keeping the beat through the song and the piano remains throughout. As the singer has dynamic rise the drums join in to strengthen the song. The male and female leads switch throughout the song and are in unison in other parts, creating variants within each verse, making the song more interesting to listen to.

Enchantedhttp://www.mydivadoll.com/?a=/fiche&pseudo=twilights676

Enchanted, which came out in 2007, is the story of Giselle who is from Andalasia and her prince. His evil stepmother does not want him to marry and her have to give up her throne so she sends Giselle to New York City. There she meets Robert and his daughter and learns about life in the real world. When the prince comes to rescue her she realizes that she is actually in love with Robert. This is a modern day take from Cinderella which has been made into a play, and likely in years to come this story will also be performed in many theaters around the country.

Ever Ever After
"Ever Ever After." Alan Menken, Carrie Underwood, Enchanted. Walt Disney Records, 000092502, 2007. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7519585 (April 6, 2010).

This song happens at the end of the movie when all the good that came from past events, such as Robert, his daughter, and Giselle becoming a family. Also the prince and Robert's ex-fiance meet and get married. This part plays an important part in the movie because it looks back on everything that had happened and everything good that came from it. It shows how powerful love can be in a situation like that and how much it means in someone's life. The song is played with electric guitar and drums and has a more country feel to it. Brushes are used on the snare drums creating a softer pattern but there are some cymbal crashes as the voice gets louder. As the singer raises the dynamic level the drums are louder to help her out and the electric guitar uses a lot of different sounds instead of just simply guitar. The pattern is kept basically the same throughout and the voice serves as the leading instrument throughout the song. It also has some layered voices at the end of the song which bring back the idea of true love's kiss.

Beauty and the Beast

This is a Disney movie that was based off of a fairytale and has since been performed as a play and musical many time. This is the story of Belle who lives with her father, who is an inventor, and ends up in the Beast's castle. As a trade for her father's life Belle is taken prisoner and through time her and the Beast begin to fall in love, breaking the spell on the castle. Be Our Guest
"Be Our Guest." Alan Menken, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury, Beauty and the Beast. Walt Disney Records, 860743, 1991. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=2355753 (April 6, 2010).

During the movie Belle has just gone down to get food and the dishes put on a show for her. They are inviting her to be part of their "family" and want to show her how excited everyone is about her being there. Because they are all so excited they will do anything for her, even if it is against the Beast's will. This is an important part because it is the first time she feels welcome in the castle and leads to this feeling like her home. It also shows how important she is for the castle. In the song there is accordion playing, some flute, and some strings. They are runs mimic the "be our guest" line in the song and the strings hold notes as Lumiere's voice goes up in pitch. As they are singing about how hard life is the piano is just alternating between a few notes, creating tension. The cymbals crash together when they are talking about the courses and how exciting it is. There aren't many instrument parts in this song as the dish sounds are often used as the music in the background.

Beauty and the Beast
"Beauty and the Beast." Alan Menken, Angela Lansbury, Beauty and the Beast. Walt Disney Records, 860743, 1991. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=2355753 (April 6, 2010).

This song occurs in the castle ballroom as a ballad recognizing the love developing between Belle and the Beast. Belle and the Beast are dancing in the ballroom as Ms. Potts is watching them singing this song. It is after the Beast has tamed his temper and Belle is beginning to like to spend time with him. This is an important part of the movie because it is the theme of the movie but also because it is the first place in the movie when their love is recognized out loud. They are both beginning to realize their feelings for each other and this dance and song helps those feeligns come out. The song begins with flute and piano playing in the melody that the chorus is in. Then the strings begin to play the same melody until Ms. Potts begins to sing. The wind instruments and strings respond back to Ms. Potts lyrics, mimicking parts of the rhythms. The music is slow as they are dancing together and it is meant to be a love song. As they dance farther away the music slowly dies out, letting them be alone.
