My Playlist:
For my playlist I chose to do songs that had either been in a movie that was based off of a musical or a movie that turned into a musical. I wanted to do something with Disney movies and I realized that many had been made into musicals recently or even plays and that helped me decide my continuous theme throughout my project.

Time Playlist:
For my time playlist I chose to do musicals that were on Broadway during the 1950s and 1960s. I knew this was a time period where many hit musicals that are still famous today had come out. I knew that some of these musicals have some extremely well known songs and I wanted to be able to include songs that a lot of people would know, regardless of if they have ever seen the musical.

Place Playlist:
For my place playlist I chose to use the place where the hit musicals are always running, Broadway. I began with the general idea of New York City but I narrowed it down to the musicals that are currently running on Broadway. Some of these musicals have been running for a long time, some are remakes, and some are brand new.

I believe this created a large amount of diversity within my playlists by using current and old Broadway hits and including movie soundtracks. Although there aren't a lot of musical similarities between each of these songs they all aim at doing the same thing: pleasing the crowd.

  1. I am citing "my playlist-movie soundscape" for question #1. I found your exploration of the musical movie cross-over really interesting. I have been involved in musical theater my entire life and love listening to the music. I felt that you could have discussed Disney musicals less and added musicals such as Chicago, Hairspray, and The Producers.

  2. I am citing “My playlist-movie soundtracks” for question #1. I too have grown up with Disney movies and musicals. I have always loved this music and every time I listen I am transported back to my childhood days. However, while I love all the songs that you included, it might have been helpful to limit the number of songs you chose from each musical and to add some others from musicals such as Mary Poppins, Chicago, Hairspray, and Tarzan.

  3. I am citing "My Playlist-Movie Soundtracks" for question #1. I really connected with many of the songs that you posted! I would suggest adding songs from other musicals as well (similar to the above comments) because I think variety would add other interesting perspectives to your blog.

  4. I am citing "Current Broadway Musicals" for part 3 of task 7. I enjoyed reading your commentary and learning about the roles that the songs play in the context of a specific musical as well as the overall Broadway sound, but in the end I found that most of the songs are still too pop sounding for my liking and not something I can really identify with.

  5. I am citing your third playlist, "Current Broadway Musicals" for Part 1 of Task 7. I think you've done a good job of getting together some representative songs of mainstream commercial musical theatre, but I would have liked to see you explore the genre more and the wealth and variety of sounds and styles that are a part of contemporary musical theatre. For instance, I would have liked to see more complex composers like Stephen Sondheim (INTO THE WOODS, COMPANY, SWEEENY TODD, amongst others), Lin Manuel Miranda (IN THE HEIGHTS), Adam Guettel (THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA), Brian Yorkey/Tom Kitt (NEXT TO NORMAL), etc, represented in your list rather than exclusively citing pop, blockbuster musicals. I would have included these tracks in the place of those you cited from JERSEY BOYS, MAMMA MIA! or MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET because they are jukebox musicals (their scores are made up entirely of pop music from a specific era or artist - in this case, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, ABBA, and 1950s rock, respectively - and were not composed for the show itself). I also would not have included SOUTH PACIFIC since, even though it was revived on Broadway several years ago, it was written in 1949 and so isn't really contemporary.

  6. I am citing your playlist, "Musicals of the 1950s and 1960s" for question 3 of task 7. I found this playlist and your project to be interesting, however, I do not identify with this music mostly because of its sing-song nature, and I personally do not find it to be audiotopic.

  7. i. I am citing the first playlist here for part 3 of the task. I learned a lot about musicals and I have seen a few here or there, but for whatever reason this music does not resonate with me. It’s not even a matter of like and dislike, it is just not something I would search for on my iTunes to listen to at any time that I can think of.

  8. I am citing your Current Musicals playlist for question #1. As a musical theater enthusiast, I can easily identify with your choices in the playlist. I think you chose a good mix of Broadway shows and showed the wide variety of music that exists on Broadway, contrary to popular belief. However, you did leave out "Legally Blonde: The Musical", which is one of my favorite modern musicals.

  9. I am using your playlist for #1. I really enjoy the topic that you chose. I think it is very interesting because I have not seen many Broadway shows, but I am familiar with most of the movie remakes of the plays. I think you did a very good job of highlighting the well known movies and the songs that they are most known for. I think that I would have added a song from “Hairspray” because that is a more recent movie that came out.

  10. I am using your Broadway musical playlist for question number three. I admire the time and effort you put into your blog, and I think that it is extremely well done. I'm sorry to say, however, that Broadway musicals aren't really my style, as I have never really been a fan of "singing dialogue" and don't really enjoy musicals as a whole. I did appreciate the chance to learn more, however.

  11. I love the soundtrack list. I put it in #1 for the task. There is nothing that makes me happier than musicals, disney, etc. I'd add some Mulan for sure. Also completely unrelated- but you have to see/listen to Next To Normal. It's a show on broadway right now and it is exxxxxxcellent.

  12. I am citing this playlist for question #3. I believe the experience of seeing a Broadway musical live versus merely hearing the soundtrack is drastically different. However, when I actively listen to the sonic elements of the music, I’m not drawn towards what I hear. The beauty of a musical is the theatrical element of its production. I struggle to engage with the music because of not only the story-based themes of each song, but also because my interests need to be enhanced by the visual element.

  13. I am citing your Movie soundtrack playlist for question number one. I really loved the playlist because it made me think of memories from my childhood. All of the songs listed were from movies or Broadway shows that I loved growing up. These are all shows and movies that have a feeling of happiness and youthfulness tied to them, which is why I truly loved this playlist.

  14. I am citing your "My Playlist - Movie Soundtracks" for question #1 task 7. I LOVE this playlist. I can relate to all of these songs because they remind me of my youth and the easier/less stressful days of my life. "Summer Nights" and "A Whole New World" are probably my two favorite songs in the world and make me feel all tingly inside.

  15. I am citing your movie playlist as #1 for task 7. I grew up with all of the movies you included and the songs are still meaningful to me today. Every time I listen to these songs I am flooded with fond memories of my childhood. If I were to add a song to your playlist I would add "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from the movie Mulan. You incorporated a lot of disney songs into your playlist and I think that this is an important disney song that most people connect with.

  16. I am citing your Movie Soundtracks playlist for question #1 for the task. This is music that I have listened to my entire life, and it always resonates as audiotopic for me. I loved the different integration of styles of musicals, moving from animated Disney movies, to movies/shows like Grease, and then to Phantom of the Opera. I think "Honey, Honey" from Mamma Mia (or any other of the songs from the movie/show) would also be a good addition to this playlist.

  17. I am citing this for #2. The music from these musicals brings back memories because i have gone to see some of them. I will explore them again.
